Abstract

Hybridity, third space and mimicry are well known postcolonial concepts of Homi Bhabha. In this paper it will be analysed how these concepts had an impact on archaeological research. Most papers referring to Bhabha are dealing with cultural contact situations in the past. Five different ways of using Bhabha were identified: (1) discussion of Bhabha’s concepts and translating them for the material; (2) discussion of Bhabha’s concepts but eventually referring to another theory; (3) briefly referring to Bhabha’s concepts, but no translation onto the archaeological material; (4) bringing together Bhabha and a rather traditional theory on cultural mixing and (5) translating the hybridity concept by defining a new term for archaeology.
