Abstract

Selected examples show how two castles directly adjacent to one another that at first sight would seem to correspond to the phenomenon of a “twin castle” may have different causes for their emergence. Previous installations or prefortifications may be the cause, or the second castle may also be the reaction to an already existing structure, for example in the form of a siege castle. The relationship of the two castles to one another is not static in this understanding, but rather can change at short notice, or even only briefly, because of altered political circumstances.
