Abstract

In this contribution I will examine the concepts of Raumwissen and Wissensraum in terms of their suitability as analytical categories for historical-archaeological research. Against the backdrop of a practice theoretical perspective, I will discuss how Raumwissen and Wissensraum may be included in the archaeological analysis of everyday practice. The starting point is Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus. To overcome its static character, I employ the concept of Eigensinn as outlined by the historian of everyday life Alf Lüdtke. The integration of Eigensinn into habitus leads to a theoretical conception that lends itself well to the archaeological analysis of everyday practice. After an illustration of an appropriate methodological approach, I will discuss the place of Raumwissen and Wissensraum in the framework outlined here.
